![]() While fighting bad guy Lityerses, Apollo is thrilled and confused to see Meg arrive and join the fight, but her unwillingness to talk about her time with Nero worries Apollo. Apollo and his companions are able to find shelter at a Waystation and help from two former hunters that have rejected immortality to be together, however, the two women ask Apollo for help in rescuing their young daughter, Georgina, who went missing after seeking the Oracle of Trophonius to stop Emperor Commodus from destroying their way of life. Apollo partners with demigod Leo, his previously-eternally-captive girlfriend, Calypso, and Leo’s mechanical dragon, Festus, to carry out his mission. However, things only seem to be going wrong for Apollo as he has to face the terrifying prophecy, restore his many neglected oracles, return to his godly position, and find a way to free Meg from her evil stepfather, Nero. Reading challenges fulfilled: book #43 for the year, and #13 in my Finish the Series Challenge Title comes from: Apollo is seeking a prophecy from the Oracle in the Cave of Trophonius ![]() This prophecy was even worse – it was a sonnet!! How funny! The previous prophecy had been given in a *shudder* limerick. ![]() Each chapter starts with a haiku that gives a hint of what the chapter is about, but you only understand it after you’ve read the chapter. Riordan does have lots of fun with poetry in the book. At one point, Leo event comments that’s how all the prophecies seem to work. The book follows the standard Riordan format – limited time to complete a task with bad guys trying to stop the questing party. She’s around, but mostly just grunts and fights things. Meg isn’t as important a character in this book. They actually gave up immortality as Hunters of Artemis in order to be in a relationship together! Of course, Apollo is completely flabbergasted they would give up the blessing of the gods for love, but he starts to understand their feelings by the end. Emmie and Jo are my new favorite characters, probably at least somewhat because they’re adults in a sea of teenagers and spoiled Emperors. Apollo at least is starting to realize he’s not the center of anyone’s world but his own. That means I’m constantly annoyed by Apollo/Lester’s attitude, but I like the side characters. They defeat Commodus by working together (but only temporarily) and Apollo has the next prophecy so he can figure out where to go next.įinal thoughts: The book is similar in tone to the first in the series. Calypso and Leo stay behind to help protect the Waystation from the coming attack. After that adventure, Apollo gets a prophecy stating he (and Meg) must enter the Oracle in the Cave of Trophonius to stop Commodus. ![]() There, they discover they must find the Throne of Memory and rescue Georgina from Commodus. The group ends up at the Waystation, one of Artemis’ safe houses. Unfortunately, Apollo and Commodus have a history. ![]() They end up in Indianapolis, current home to Commodus. Summary: Apollo/Lester, Leo and Calypso are looking for the next Oracle that is being controlled by an ancient Roman Emperor. Setting: mostly Indianapolis, soon after the events of The Hidden Oracle Length: 401 pages of text, 414 pages with glossary It helps when it’s in the house for the kids to read. I didn’t think the first book was quite as good as Riordan’s other series, but I still enjoyed it enough to read this book. This is the second book in the Trials of Apollo series. ![]()
